Canoe fraudster to repay £600,000
Insurance fraudster Anne Darwin has agreed to repay £600,000 of money claimed after the staged death of her husband, John.
Leeds Crown Court heard that Mrs Darwin would repay a total of £591,838.25 - made up of £363,700.01 compensation to the victims of the crime and £228,138.24 under the terms of the Proceeds of Crime Act.
The couple, each jailed for more than six years for their part in staging the death, will sell what assets they have to meet the costs.
Both husband and wife, of the Cliff, Seaton Carew, near Hartlepool, embarked on a new life in Panama after Mr Darwin faked his death in a canoeing accident in March 2002.
He returned to the UK in 2007, telling police he was a missing person with amnesia.
The pair's ploy failed when a picture of the couple taken during their time in Panama emerged on the internet.
