Event cancellation claims in freeze

The big freeze has seen a rise in claims for trade fair and conference cancellations, according to an insurer.

Hiscox said the Arctic weather resulted in empty exhibition halls and deserted conference centres.

Recent claims included cancelled trade fairs and seminars because not enough exhibitors and delegates could make it due to blocked roads and cancelled trains.

Private events were also hit, including a 40th birthday party cancelled after months of planning.

With unexpectedly cold weather like the recent freeze, peace of mind cancellation insurance can be the only ray of sunshine, said Hiscox's events insurance expert Ed Pugh.

"You can get a policy as soon as you've started paying for your event," said Mr Pugh.

"Buying early will cover you for a longer period of time, often at a lower cost than insuring closer to the event date. If you wait too long to buy your insurance you may not get cover for adverse weather, for example, if forecasters are already predicting it."
