Injury claims process speeded up

Around 80% of road traffic accident personal injury claims will be settled quicker thanks to changes to the system.

Under new rules that came into effect on April 30, the time taken to settle claims valued between £1,000 and £10,000 is expected to be reduced from two years to no more than nine months.

They also state that insurers must make a decision on the liability for a road accident within 15 working days.

Legal fees will be fixed, which may reduce the 10% added to motor insurance to cover these costs, and standard electronic claim forms will be used to reduce the duplication of information.

Nick Starling, the ABI's director of general insurance and health, welcomed the changes. He said: "We expect that these changes will be the start of wider ranging reforms to ensure that more claimants benefit from a simpler and speedier compensation process, and we would like to see this new process extended to cover employers' liability insurance claims."
