No legal recourse over buggy recall

No legal action can be taken against the British manufacturers of a buggy recalled in the US, trading standards has said.

One million umbrella pushchairs in America have been recalled by UK-based company Maclaren after reports that 12 children had their fingertips cut off when they were caught in the hinges.

Northamptonshire County Council's trading standards department has said the firm only reported one similar case in the UK.

David Hedger, interim head of trading standards at the authority, said: "Any injury to any child from any product is regrettable but you cannot take all risks out of all products or situations.

"This serves as a timely reminder to anybody using this type of product to follow the instructions and make sure the little fingers of children aren't at risk in any way.

"From a legal perspective, we don't feel there is anything further we can require them (Maclaren) to do. Obviously, it is a matter for the company if they want to do anything voluntarily."
