UK car crime hotspots revealed

Chislehurst in south east London is the worst place in the UK for car crime, according to an analysis of insurance claims.

In the past year, 3.82% of drivers in Chislehurst, in the borough of Bromley, have claimed for the theft of, or from, a vehicle.

The data from moneysupermarket.com revealed Wingate in Durham was second on the list of car crime hotspots, with Redbridge in east London and Hatfield, Doncaster taking the third and fourth spots respectively.

East London proved to be a particularly bad area for car crime, featuring several times in the top 20 places for car insurance claims.

Large urban areas were also high on the list, with Manchester city centre and areas of Sheffield, Cardiff and Leeds featuring.

Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: "I am not surprised to see metropolitan areas of the country such as Manchester and Sheffield fall in the top 20 postcode areas.

"However, what the research does reveal is that a broad mix of places across the country are at risk, highlighting the issue that no matter where you live, there is always a chance you could become a victim of theft. Motorists should take this risk seriously."
