Uninsured council billed £100,000
A council that failed to take out insurance cover for a court case may be forced to pay thousands of pounds in fees - despite winning the case.
An unidentified claimant accused the council of discrimination on the grounds of gender in an employment tribunal which went on for 36 days.
Despite the council applying to the tribunal for costs, there is a limit on the amount of funds that a claimant can be forced to pay.
The financial bill has been estimated at as much as £100,000, although how much is owed is not listed in the minutes of a confidential council meeting.
Council solicitors have been told to pursue recovery of "as much of the costs as possible", chief executive Geraldine McGahey told the Larne Times.
Councillors were told insurance was now in place, and the local authority is now defending a second sex discrimination case.
