Uninsured drivers face car seizure
Police in Cambridgeshire have seized almost 1,000 vehicles from motorists who failed to gain insurance since the start of the year.
A total of 120 people were stopped by police and found to be driving without insurance or otherwise in accordance with a driving licence last month alone. Those caught face a £200 fine, a £160 recovery fee and six points on their licence.
After police have seized a vehicle, there is a 14-day period where the vehicles can be reclaimed if the appropriate documents are provided. Should the documents not be provided in time, the vehicle is either crushed or sold at auction depending on its value.
"This work is an important part of making the roads a safer place. The dangers of driving without insurance are many and it will not be tolerated," said Inspector Alan Page, from the roads policing unit.
"The fact that we continue to find uninsured vehicles on the roads shows that there are still drivers who think it is acceptable to drive without insurance or a licence. These people are a menace and a danger to themselves and others."
